Abstract

Stefan Hofmann, a psychologist and professor at Philipps-Universität Marburg, proposes, in Emoção em terapia: da ciência à prática (Emotion in therapy: from science to practice), a systematic dialogue between empirical research, neurobiological theory, and clinical applications within the framework of the cognitivist psychology of emotions. The work outlines models of emotional processing, including dual-stream approaches involving the thalamo-amygdala and prefrontal cortex pathways, and examines modulating factors such as individual vulnerabilities and contextual stressors. The text further describes strategies for affective regulation, addressing rumination and worry, as well as structured techniques for cognitive reappraisal and mindfulness-based interventions, with an emphasis on loving-kindness and compassion-based meditations. The book incorporates appendices with validated psychometric instruments for emotional assessment and monitoring, proposing a transdiagnostic construct that expands the scope of traditional cognitive-behavioral therapies and demonstrates systemic applicability to mood, anxiety, and eating disorders.
