A question of identity: reflections on Carioca Funks of the 1990s

Abstract

This article aims to analyze two Funk Carioca’s lyrics from 1990 decade: Rap do Silva, produced by MC Bob Rum in 1995 and Rap do Salgueiro, developed by Claudinho e Buchecha in 1996. This study object was chosen in order to explore a musical genre, which is socially discredited because of its situational aspect permeated by violence and organized crime. Besides, we believe that although the analyzed Funks seem to be violent, because of Funk’s stigma promoted by the press of the nineties, the songs present a “non-violent” identity. That is why we intend to observe, more specifically, the grammatical elements which go beyond the sense of language and relate those elements not only to the pragmatic factors of textuality, but also to beliefs and values that circulate the social historical dimension. Therefore, this research has the goal of reflecting about the Linguistic Identity and Social Representations that exist in those lyrics based on the assumptions of Serge Moscovici (2007) and Patrick Charaudeau (2015), through the Pragmatic Factors of Textuality promoted by Beaugrande and Dressler (1983 apud COSTA VAL, 2011) and studied by Textual Linguistic, which is represented in this study by Anna Christina Bentes (2001), Koch & Travaglia (2006), Costa Val (2011), Luís Antônio Marcuschi (2012) and Ingedore Koch (2015).
