On the margins: relations between women, work and the right to land in Mozambique

Abstract

This article discusses gender relations based on the cultural division of labor and land ownership rights among the Sena people in Marromeu district, Sofala province, Mozambique. The work is a part of a field research conducted between 2013 to 2016. Which from the perspective of hermeneutics and interpretive experience sought to penetrate the social discourses of the oral narratives of the Sena to understand their meanings and their ways of producing women and men within of this social context. Among the various aspects of the livelihoods and social organization of these populations, it was found that the Zambezi River plays an important role in the process of day-to-day assignments, such as women's occupations, who work on their margins, which includes agriculture of subsistence and of the men who daily take up their bed, through fishing and navigation. However, it can be seen that the social and cultural duty that women have in the use of land does not manifest itself in the same way as in the right of their property. There are cultural issues that put women on the margins of this right, even though throughout their lives they have in them and through them manifested their femininities.
