Between freedom and torture: a history about numbers during Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil

This paper intends to reflect critically on the meaning of the mathematical elements evidenced in the political discourses during the period of the struggle against the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. For this, I have presented a historical contextualization of numbers and dialogue with two political discourses that understand the numbers in their freedom and torture potential to represent the number of people affected by the coronavirus. This analysis comes from Dr. Luiz Henrique Mandetta's
comments during a ministerial reunion on April 3, 2020, and a debate with former health ministers on May 09, 2020, in the face of mathematical elements that were used to represent people and report facts. I articulate these speeches to the ideals of freedom and democracy, with their effects of trust or mistrust, of torture or manipulation of the numbers that represent people in isolation as a measure of containment of the pandemic. In this context, I consider that it is necessary to use the numbers
reliably, but not in an abstract way, for their representation of infected, dead, and recovered people from the disease. The numbers, sometimes used for political interests, must contribute to the formation of human and solidary citizens, and be used with social responsibility, to guarantee the effective condition of citizenship.
