An epistemological reflection: is there a tourism theory

The present article proposes to develop a reflection based on a basic question: is there a theory of / about tourism? To assist in the development of this work, authors were used that deal with the themes of theory, the production of scientific knowledge and the epistemology of tourism. Among them, we can mention: Otaviano Pereira, Neil Leiper, PanossoNetto. This article presents a qualitative approach, utilizing bibliographical research as technique with critical character and supported by the research and importance of the epistemology of tourism. National and international literature were used, since the Brazilian research about tourism is quite recent with a little more than four decades, while European researches started in the early XX century. By being qualitative research, this investigation does not present a hypothesis. As a result of this reflection, this article points out the importance of the formulation of theories that treat tourism in two aspects: the strengthening of the tourist episteme and; the encouragement of new theoretical studies in the area.
