Abstract

The maxillary expander with differential opening (EDO) is a device used for the treatment of maxillary atresia. Initially, it was developed to assist in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP); however, it is currently also used in the treatment of non-cleft patients presenting with crossbites. This expander acts by promoting the separation of the midpalatal suture and has the ability to produce a greater expansion in the anterior region of the maxilla. The objective of this study is to describe the benefits of this expander, the clinical changes it induces, and the outcomes observed. This analysis was conducted using the Scopus database in March 2025. The descriptors used were: "maxillary expander with differential opening", "maxillary expansion with differential opening", "Garib maxillary expander", "Garib maxillary expansion", and "differential opening". There were no restrictions regarding the year or language of publication. A total of 25 studies were initially identified, but only 12 were selected, as the others did not have a direct relationship with the topic. Additionally, 3 other studies were included to complement the work. The articles reviewed showed that this expander provides beneficial outcomes for patients, promoting a greater increase in the intercanine width. Nevertheless, when compared with conventional expanders, the studies did not demonstrate significantly distinct clinical changes.
