Abstract

With the aim of reflecting on the different interpretations of the Vargas period in the present time, the article addresses two dimensions: that of the imaginary and that of memory. To this end, the analysis draws on a study conducted by the Research Group on the Dimensions of the Vargas Regime and its Consequences (CNPq), involving six hundred students who answered a questionnaire with ten questions related to current perceptions of historical facts concerning Getúlio Vargas's government. It also draws on the testimony and memory of Fernanda Montenegro, an important Brazilian actress who experienced that period and wrote about it in her autobiography Prologue, Act, Epilogue (2019). The text, therefore, problematizes the image constructed about the Vargas period as the result of both the memories of those who lived through it and the imaginary that has persisted for new generations—particularly regarding a regime that marked the country's history and left lasting scars.
