In a dialogue between Lacanian psychoanalysis and structuralism, the Cahiers pour l’Analyse project is reexamined as an effort to formulate a logic of structure beyond its later reformulation as a “logic of the signifier.” Drawing on the “Rat Man” case, Lacan uses Lévi-Strauss’s canonical myth formula to reinterpret obsessive neurosis, showing that the subject arises from the incompleteness and internal imbalance of the symbolic order. Structure is not a closed, self-sufficient system; it relies on a constitutive remainder through which the subject appears as both effect and symptom of the system’s inability of totalization.
