Gender and Unheimliche: psychoanalytic reflections on prejudice and violence

  • Christiana Oliveira

Abstract

This paper discusses how gender is thought of from the point of view of oedipal relations and the multiple desiring possibilities of the subject. The notion of the "Unheimlich" and the narcissism of small differences will be used to reflect on prejudice and violence against people who express their gender in a way that differs from the current social norm. To this end, authors such as Foucault and Deleuze will be used as a critique of the excess of discourses that monitor and contribute to the standardization of the Self, demanding subjectivity as an element underlying the norm.
